We carry the stories of those who labored to make our clothing. From the growing and picking of the crops to the sewing and manufacture of the apparel, in every thread and fiber are woven stories of the blood, sweat and tears it took to make us look good.
Check the Label: Wearing Fashion That Makes Sense
It's time we looked at the labels of clothing, looked into the companies who manufacture them and understood the power we have as consumers to bring change.
One Example: Behind the Swoosh
Check out the video below from Catholic Jim Keady as he demands justice for the workers of Nike in Indonesia. If you don't have 20 minutes to spare, jump to 15:10 on the timeline and watch Keady's encounter with Phil Knight, owner of Nike.
Our Response
While it is easy to get frustrated (as many who have seen this video have been), we must remember that we must position our heart to love like Jesus because even Jesus treasures Phil Knight. So we treasure Phil Knight too, through compassionate action to call him and those like him to higher standards of fairness and justice. Because again, while anger and hate make a scene for a season, love is the only thing that has and will sustain the tests of time.
Our Consumption Has Power
We hope to bring change by:
1. Bringing awareness to how our buying habits and how our lifestyle affects our earth, people, animals, workers, poverty, our food and most importantly, our relationship with Jesus.
2. Raising the standards of factories and jobs in third world countries, so that those working in a sweatshops are paid a fair wage and they’re basic human rights are met.
3. Provide product lists of daily items we all use and need, made up of safe, clean, sustainable, fair and just products. List of products and companies that put the values of Christ before that of money, profit, vanity and selfish gain.
