Trade Justice

Make world trade work for the whole world.

We are campaigning for trade justice–not free trade–with the rules weighted to benefit poor people, the nations they live in and the environment.

We believe that everyone has the right to feed their families, have the means to get an education, make a decent living and protect their environment. But the rich and powerful are pursuing trade policies that put profits before the needs of people and the planet. To end poverty and protect the environment we need trade justice.

What God's Story Has To Tell Us

The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it.
The world and all its people belong to him.
Psalm 24:1 (NLT ©2007)

You shall not withhold the wages of poor and needy laborers, whether other Israelites or immigrants who reside in your land in one of your towns. You shall pay them their wages daily before sunset, because they are poor and their livelihood depends on them; otherwise they might cry to the Lord against you, and you would incur guilt.
Deuteronomy 24:14-15

Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.
James 5:4

We believe as people living in the ways of Jesus and in the ways of love, we have a responsibility to see that all people of the earth be treated with the dignity and respect as they too are children of their Creator.

What We Can Do: Awareness Turns To Action

Around the world, unfair trade policies are keeping the poor in the trenches of poverty while our own consumption practices make the pockets and bank account of the rich wealthier. This is not an attack on those who might have wealth, but rather a call to all of us, rich or not, because as consumers we all have the means to make changes in our personal habits as consumers as well as demanding change in trade policies and laws we support at the ballot box.

Around the world, new ideas and practices are emerging from Fair Trade to Direct Trade, that keep in mind those who make, grow, create and manufacture the products and goods we use on a daily basis. Buying products that carry Fair Trade or Direct Trade labels ensure that you know your money is going back in the communities, villages and people from which the products and goods came.
